Was he really into me for all those years?

my boyfriend of 4 years recently confessed that he has been cheating on me for months. He said that he loves us all and cant let any of us go. I thought he was joking at first but he was serious. I ended up dumping him which was more painfull than ever, now i keep asking myself if he luved me for all those years or he was using me.
