Is voting in an election purely tribal?

When we and our family have voted for a party for years, can we ever really see the faults of a leader whose party we feel comfortable with? Does Gordon Brown's enormous 'bigot' gaffe actually diminish him in the eyes of the faithful? Do we care if our leaders are two faced or not?
